# Change a note’s template with Update template

> Use Update template to rewrite a finished note in a different template without re-recording the visit. It replaces the current note, so recent edits are lost.

Rewrite a processed note in a different template without recording again.

**Who this is for:** Clinicians · **Plans:** All plans · **Where:** Web (app.chartnote.com)

## Change the template

**1. Open the finished note.**

**2. In the note's top toolbar, open the robot/sparkle menu (it also has **After visit summary** and **Follow Up**).**

**3. Click **Update template**.**

**4. Choose the new template from the list.**

**5. If the template supports billing, adjust the Setting, Visit type and billing codes.**

**6. Read the message and click **Update note**.**

>
> Update template replaces the existing note. It doesn't create a separate one. The sections, billing codes and title are replaced, and any edits you made since the note was generated are lost.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Update template isn't available while the note is with your assistant. Use Unassign from… to take it back first.

> [!TIP]
>
> Update template only changes the template. To add information from a new recording, record an update on the note's **Update** tab instead.
